Alba does election

October 3rd 2008 08:02
Only you can silence yourself - Alba

This is Alba’s poignant attempt at alerting American people to the importance of voting in ‘the election’.

Funny how the American election has become more important than any of the little ones we have here, you know when we elect prime ministers and things like that. This dratted event has swamped the Australian media for too long. I can’t tell you exact dates or any other concrete information but I know I’ve grown a few wrinkles.

As much as I would like to ignore the whole shemozzle, unfortunately we need a level of interest in as it whoever is elected will affect us here in the land of TimTims.

So back to the advert, let’s face it, how will a pic of actorly-challenged Alba encourage anyone to vote? To me she is synonymous for looking attractive; standing around with wobbly lips and doing very little that adds depth to a film.

But of course there is the obvious bondage element. Seeing Alba bound and vulnerable may be a massive turn-on to some. So should we assume those who like the idea of Alba with even less of a voice are likely to vote after seeing the ad? Really? Is her silence that prolific? And what does this say about Alba? That she is more informative with a muzzle on? So many questions... and such little personal regard for the answers.

Alba

Maybe I should try and slightly balance my post stance and explain that her intention is: “If you don’t register and vote and make a difference, and hopefully change the bad things that are happening in our country, you are essentially just binding and muzzling yourself.” Yep, I can see her point, I'm just not that convinced.

I know this post is risking a tidal wave of ‘I love Jessica and all she does,’ enraged supporters, or even worse, avid election advocators, but I don’t care. It’s Friday night, I’m staying in, I’m going to watch crap telly and sometimes the truth must be said.

This just doesn’t make sense and quite honestly, it’s stupid.

HAHAHAHA

I love this post! Trace, you dynamo, I've never heard you lay it down quite like that!

Totally agree about Alba - beautiful but that's about it.

And about the US election - I hate that it has to have such an effect on us.

It's all wearing a bit thin, crap telly is definitely a better option this Friday night.

Hi Mich

Yes, I did let loose a bit didn't I? Glad you enjoyed my rant!

I love crap telly nights, I think it will include a SATC episode thanks to Arena.

Thanks for coming over, hope you have a great night.

I was thinking of creating a blog called 'Blogging in Australia'. But you know what? I can't be stuffed. No-one would get read it.

Is there an election in the US sometime soon?

Is there some financial crisis over there?

I spent the first half of the week reading about the washup from the AFL grand final, and the second half of the week reading about the upcoming NRL grand final. I don't even have time for the Spring Racing Carnival. Thank God the Melbourne Cup is a month away. I just hope I don't get too absorbed in the Australia vs India cricket series, and forget about the race that stops the nation.

Can you put in an informal vote for a post? Or just refuse to vote?

Ouch! I think I just got something worse than my lips caught in my zipper.

Hi Henrietta

Hope you're not in too much pain, zippers are tricky things. So many things can get stuck in them.

I spent most of this week avoiding the news so thanks for that update, now I won't watch/listen/read it for the next week. Brilliant.

But be careful all those news events don't get overwhelming, Henrietta...be on your guard.

PS I accept all votes, informal, formal, ridiculous, non-related...rather like my burblings.

In the US, celebs have pretty much nothing to do with how people vote, or whether or not they do so. People here believe that celebs should not have opinions on anything. Yet, celebs increasingly pull this kind of crap every season. It has nothing to do with what Alba looks like, either--voting is a personal choice. If someone doesn't want to vote, they don't feel like the victims of bondage. She just needs a life.

Hi Ren

So this celebrity crap happens often at election time?

To me celebrities and politics are not linked so that's part of the reason why this antic bothered me. Hopefully, people look at the real facts when they vote and not look at dopey, non-spectacular actors.

Thanks for commenting, was great to hear your opinion.

What are they alerting us to?

The importance of voting?

Last I checked the United States is a country where, every 4 years two people who are selected by our warring factions called "Democrats" and "Republicans" place their groomed and selected candidates before us and we're FORCED to select one or the other.

Barack Obama and Jon McCain are the same person. Regardless of which one of you pick you're just perpetually the United States sectarian violence that has ravaged our country in an all-out war over whose party is more influential.

It's not just the Bush Administration - it's the whole system.

No longer are Democrats or Republicans interested in the welfare of the masses. They're interested only in overtaking their opposing party.

Instead of alerting us to why we should vote - maybe they should alert us to how we're being a bunch of puppets and a truly free election hasn't been held in nearly a hundred years.

Maybe in the future we will get elections where the candidates are real people - with their own ideas - beliefs and values. Not just Barack Obama spewing "Hope" because his campaign manager tells him to. Idiots.

hmmm maybe if they were less stylised they might have more impact, it just looks like a glamour shoot for a fashion magazine!

however her intentions are good, if it gets people to register and vote and participate in the process and voice their opinions, well good on her!

oh on a similar note, did you see the mass of celebrities in the latest "register to vote" community service announcement?

I agree with Morgan - especially the second picture - looks like a magazine ad for Gucci or something, she just needs a pair of dark sunnies.

But then again, if it makes any difference at all to people getting off their bums and registering to vote, then that's a good thing. Same with the "Don't Vote" video.

Excellent rant Tracy, and totally founded

The main thing I get from those photos is that even when being bound and silenced it is of the utmost importance to apply as much eye makeup as possible. And make sure the that material you are bound with has an S&M element to it. Because sex sells oppression too. Seriously though, she looks ridiculous. Good idea, bad execution.

Alba is totally vacant and ridiculous. She just looks stupid and insincere. I applaud her for trying to get a message across, but I don't think she'll be inspiring anyone. Well, not inspiring anyone to vote, anyway.

I went out, and quite frankly, there was as much crap telly in the "real world" as there probably was permeating your visual cortex on the actuatelly you were watching. Please don't give Ms. Alba such a hard time--the less celebrities (at least 99.99% of them anyway) speak there minds, that's just one more time I don't have to kill a puppy (kidding--too much Vitamin C)

Hey Trace

Great post - you have this new energy about you.... I like it!

I have to say that I like it when people use their fame to say something intelligent... - she tried i suppose. I`ve never really been into the whole politics things... seing as we always has this maniac president it never really mattered in our country. I like that people are actually taking some sort of stand and that your vote really does mean something.

But i just wish they would elect someone already... my word talk about dragging things out! We just finished the elections in Aus and then had to go through the US ones... and it`s not even over yet.

We are exhausted... can you imagine how the candidates must feel!

As absurd as it seems, if it gets a whole lot more people out there voting, I'm all for it. Your post got my attention so hopefully the ad got the attention of many who may not have bothered to vote but just might (?) now.

Good post.

Dear Anon

Thanks for that long comment and information. So much of it was concerning, especially:
Barack Obama and Jon McCain are the same person. Regardless of which one of you pick you're just perpetually the United States sectarian violence that has ravaged our country in an all-out war over whose party is more influential.

It's not just the Bush Administration - it's the whole system.

So the difference between the two barely exists? That's a scary thought, one I would love to hope isn't true for the US' sake as well as ours.

Hello Morgan

You are such a well-resourced lassie, I saw that video after writing the post. Thank-you for including it.

I am all for increasing awareness and personal responsibility, but I don’t think Alba could have that sort of influence...but who knows, I could be wrong. The method was still worth moaning about.

Hello Ruby

Your whole comment sums it up well, I've got nothing else to add:

And make sure the that material you are bound with has an S&M element to it. Because sex sells oppression too. Seriously though, she looks ridiculous. Good idea, bad execution.

Hello Lola

These are all such great comments, thank-you for yours.

I agree with you:
I applaud her for trying to get a message across, but I don't think she'll be inspiring anyone. Well, not inspiring anyone to vote, anyway.

It sounds like we agree that encouraging awareness is important but this method is ridiculous and unlikely to work.

Hello Ash

Thanks for appreciating the post, Ash. Usually when I’m writing a review I try and censor some of my strong feelings or at least try to tone them and give a balanced view. Not so with this one, I just let loose. And it felt good!!!

I also do agree and appreciate celebrities trying to make good use of their position and power. For example Bono and Billy Bragg. They have massive audiences so can share a message loudly and easily (even though I don’t always agree with what they’re saying). Whether they do it well or not, I think it’s still a good step, it has a chance of making a difference.

But Alba and politics just are not linked. It’s more like sex appeal and politics. Why didn’t they think about using a non-sexual way to try and increase knowledge and awareness? ‘Because sex sells’.

Yep, I agree, it’s exhausting....time for me to sit back on the sofa and have a rest.

Hello Janet

Thanks for your comments, that’s a point I hadn’t thought of:

Your post got my attention so hopefully the ad got the attention of many who may not have bothered to vote but just might (?) now.

I’m feeling a bit egocentric and like the thought that my post might’ve made a difference.
