Bicycle Film Festival 2007

November 16th 2007 04:51
Bicycle Film Festival 2007

I was trotting along my local high street yesterday when I spotted a poster on a lamppost for a Bicycle Film Festival. I smiled. How unique. I’ve heard of all sorts of cultural film festivals, but never a film festival centred around an object.

I stored it in my weary brain determined to find out more info when I got home. Well, I found a website that told me it’s been around for seven years, happens annually and it celebrates the bicycle in films. It is universal, travelling to places such as Tokyo, Milan, LA, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Vienna, London and Barcelona.

Here is their philosophy, I won’t summarise it as I thought it was more interesting to hear their actual description:

We are into all styles of bikes and biking. If you can name it-Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Cycling to Recumbents- we've probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance? We bring together all aspects of bicycling together to advocate its ability to transport us in many ways. Ultimately the Fest is about having a good time.

I realised that their zest for an exploration and celebration of the relationship of bikes and/in films was strangely contagious.

Then I started wondering if I knew of any bike films. I did some research and compiled a short list and discovered there were more than I thought there would be:

The Flying Scotsman (2007) - British
Beijing Bicycle (2001) - Chinese
The Bicycle Thief (1948) - Italian
BMX Bandits 1983 - Australian
Cyclo (1995) - Vietnamese
Quicksilver (1986) - American
Rush It (1977) - American
The Day I Became a Woman (2000) - Iran
Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985) - American
Jour de fête (1949) - French

As you can see, the films are multicultural ranging from countries such as France to China, so it would sense that the festival has appeal on a worldwide following.

If you’re interested the festival is on at Opera Quays Dendy, from the 28 November - 2 December 2007. Their website is: Really Long Link

And here's their website trailer:

Hi Louie,

Yes, that's what I thought...and even more so that it's so popular that it's been around for seven years and goes all over the world.

I wonder what else could be incorporated into a film festie? Hmmm....

I knew there were like cultural skiing movies etc, but this one I'd never heard of before. How fascinating!

Ooh, I've never heard of cultural skiing movies, that's interesting, Melissa.

Yes, it is fascinating isn't it?

I wonder how they came to decide that it was a bike they wanted to incorporate..maybe because it's regular, simple vehicle that can be overlooked...who knows?

Good to see you, Melissa.

Well from what I've seen of the skiing ones, it's enthusiastic skiers who get it going, so would say that this mob are enthusiastic bikers.

Good to be back online again after so long and catch up with everyone! Although I still have an entire house to sort out.

Hello Melissa

I was thinking that it was good having you around again, I was wondering how the move went. How are you finding it all? Big question I would imagine.

Yes, that would make sense that they are enthusiastic bikers...

How left of centre is that?

That's just so damned quirky that it would probably get my bum on a seat (a screening - not a bicycle that is).

Cheers

Tracy

I'm girth impaired, so I'll watch the trailers and movie, but this cycling thing is to much like exercise.

I'm on bad terms with my bike, so this festival makes me uneasy...

Hi Raven

Fair enough, I see where you’re coming from. I’m bike-impaired, I don’t have one and it’s generally out of choice, it’s too much exercise for me to endure. I’ll stick to walking...

Hi JoH

That's great that you think your husband will be interested in seeing one of the films. I think it would be an interesting experience, do you think you'll go too?

Hi Kylie

Yes, what a unique concept - the tall bike jousting. It's a bit adventurous for me but it's great to hear about all these different things.

This sounds pretty cool!

I wish there is here in Malaysia. They DO have "marathon" film festival but just for the blockbusters.

Have a blessed day

Hi Jessicca

That's a pity that they only do Blockbuster marathons in Malaysia. They don't need the extra emphasis, they tend to be popular anyway by their very nature.

Thanks for popping in, nice to see you back.
