Christmas films, why oh why?

Christmas films
Christmas films

It’s that time of year again. Christmas is looming and inevitably the usual tatty array of predictable festive tales are looming. Now I know I’m sounding Grinch-like but there seems to be a theme or assumption that these are the main kinds of films people want to see in this season. Well, what about me? Yes, I think it’s reasonable to assume that a massive corporation such as Hoyts or Greater Union will be concerned about the little folk like me. I understand the odd festive film, but to be continually and cinematically flooded with its tedious themes? Hmm, it’s a big ask.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Christmas. And fair dues, the time of year is a fact. The celebration will occur with or without my consent. And a lot of it is fun, everyone is on holiday, overeating is acceptable, people are generally happier. I like the lights even though they are environmentally dubious. So, I’m not against the celebration; just the onslaught of dull films.

And so this grumbling leads me into a sociological, existential sphere, which does make me sound poncey, but ah well. Why do we need so many Christmas films when we are already bombarded by its presence in real life? Isn’t the season sentimental enough without a plethora of crappy films to choose from? For me, seeing films is a great way to hop into another world for two hours, one usually different from my own. And seeing a Christmas film, well, isn’t that very much like reality, but just with another family?

And I have another question, have I ever seen a Christmas film I’ve liked? I honestly can’t think of any at the moment so the door is open to answers. I’m sure there must be some… I will ponder that as I trot around the shops today with its abundant jingle bells jangles and Santa paraphernalia.

Completely agree, Tracy, haven't seen a Xmas movie I have liked and I hate the plethora of Xmas movies they flood the market with.

Bad Santa ...?

And I already have my Xmas movie lined-up to watch and review for Horrorphile this year. And it's not gonna be pleasant.

I agree for the most part Tracy,

Like Bryn I say Bad Santa all the way. Easily my fave.

Then their is the X-mas action of Die Hard, or the Shane Black trilogy, Lethal Weapon Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Long Kiss Goodnight.

Gremlins and Nightmare before Xmas usually round out my Christmas Day marathon each year..

The It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia X-mas Special also makes me laugh.

Tracy, I'm a fan of most Christmas specials - the Futurama and Doctor Who ones, and Blackadder's Christmas Carol spring to mind.

Movie-wise, I'm putting my hand up for The Long Kiss Goodnight and Die Hard as well.

Hope you and your folks are well - you must be so busy looking after the little one!

HI Bryn,

I haven't seen Bad Santa, maybe it could convert me....?

Bad Santa is very removed from most Xmas movies. Billy Bob Thornton plays a grumpy, foul-mouthed, alcoholic working part-time as a Santa, and generally getting up to no good. If you like your comedy black, reckless and vulgar, then Bad Santa will certainly slap and tickle your funny bone. I reviewed it, so click on my underlined link on my original comment.

Hi all,

Well it seems as though I really should see Bad Santa....

I also thought of Nightmare Before Christmas like you said, JD. I don't think I could see the Die Hards even though I appreciate the recommendation!

I also like some of the telly specials as well, Rusty.

Good to see you all,

Byee

I can't help it... I love them. When I was a kid and the Christmas specials would start playing, it was my cue to start getting super excited about Santa. I guess some of that has lingered on in the last twenty years!

It's pretty sad, really

BUT I only watch the 'good' ones, and the only ones I actually have on DVD are Die Hard and Bad Santa I think. I like A Muppet Christmas Carol and lots of ones for kids.

I could never watch that Will Ferrell one.

Aha, another Die Hard and Bad Santa recommendation...

I think we all have a few guilty film pleasures, Mich, I think you should enjoy!!
