The difference between watching a film on DVD or at the cinema

December 7th 2006 22:52
I’ve noticed that I need a lot more willpower when watching a DVD by myself at home. Usually I determine what kind of mood I’m in, what I feel like watching before I toddle up the road and try and find it.

Yesterday was the case; I thought I would be decadent with a DVD, a bar of chocolate and no intentions of picking up the phone if it rang. I chose Jindabyne for its noted beauty and appealing storyline.

What happened? Well, I started cleaning, tidying, blogging, walking around the house with no real aim….anything but watching the DVD. I was niggled by its quietness and subtle dialogue, yet this was one of the reasons why I chose it. I didn’t want a noisy Hollywood film with a predictable ending.

And it’s a new release, I need to watch it by 7pm tonight or I’ve spent fifteen-odd dollars for a DVD that I ploughed though. Why do I do this? Is it just because I have the attention span of a newt or do I get the film assuming it will fill a gap in my life and somehow it doesn’t?

I’m still pondering….and I will watch the DVD this afternoon…..

I totally understand where you're coming from. I too often get half way through a rental and find that I have no idea what has happened because I was so busy doing others things. So until I have enough money to get a home theater I think the best solution is to just make sure you see the goods ones in the theater. As for the rest, I can sympathize with your desire not to waste the money. Try blockbuster online or netflix...you can keep them as long as you want. Sometimes I have to start a movie 3 or 4 times before I actually get through it but atleast I know Im not racking up late fees.

Hi Lizard

Thanks for your comments. I watched the DVD this afternoon and thought it was very good. I did everything I needed to do before I sat down, trying to minimise my guilt about being leisurely through the week when most of the world is working.

Your ideas are great, I'll have a look at Blockbuster online, thanks. I generally do see the good ones at the cinema but sometimes it's nice to watch them at home. I think I need to work on my dedication to home-viewing

Why don't you do what I do and copy the DVD before returning it?
Then you can view at your leisure!

Hi Anon,

I have thought of that but my machine doesn't do that!! What a pity!
