Empire Magazine’s Top 10 Movie Haircuts
February 3rd 2008 21:57
I finally saw No Country for Old Men on the weekend and I was mesmerised by Javier Bardem’s immovable bowl cut. Hair isn’t usually a topic I’d normally write about but the combination of reading Empire Magazine’s Top 10 Film Haircuts article and Bardem’s dedicated tresses, made me think further about the role of hair in films.
Here is Empire’s list arranged into my own order of memorable hairy moments:
1. Cameron Diaz - There's Something About Mary (1998). Even if you’ve seen the film too many times to think, the hair has to be included in the list. Yet, it didn’t inspire a cult following, I wonder why?
2. Gary Oldman – Dracula.(1992) What were those strange growths on his head?
3. John Travolta – Battlefield Earth (2000). I didn’t even recognise John, I thought a tree had hopped onto a head and sprouted.
4. Robert de Niro - Taxi Driver (1976). The cheap and nasty Mohawk look. Quick to do and easy to look after.
5. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey - Wayne’s World (1992). More like Mullet World.
6. Uma Thurman and Samuel J Jackson – Pulp Fiction (1994). Uma sports the slickest, vintage square cut bob that even Amelie couldn’t beat seven years later. Samuel L Jackson, well it’s handy that he had so much fat on his head in case he had a food emergency and needed to fry something in it.
7. Jack Nance – Eraserhead (1977). Nance’s shock mop of hair. Even he looks startled by the nest parked on his head.
8. Sigourney weaver - Alien 3 (1992). The female crew cut is always interesting. Was it aimed at keeping the aliens away? Maybe, I know I wouldn’t have approached her.
9. Carrie Fisher - Star Wars (1977). A classic wrap-around-the ears look which was even mentioned in Friends (so it must be famous).
10. The entire cast of Hairspray (2007). The clue is in the title. There seems to be a John Travolta trend happening.
Other hirsute nominations include Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd. This is a two for one deal as both look like they were electrocuted in the bathroom. Their next film is entitled, The Hair Bear Twins.
My final mention goes to Mike Myers in Austen Powers, Tina Turner in Mad Max and Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands.
Congratulations, shaggy friends.

Yes I agree, the prize must go to John, although Cameron looks pretty cool too...*lol*
Nothing intelligent to say, but it was a fun post.

Though I must admit some of them are quite tame when compared to the wacky hairstyles they have in Asian cinema

Do you reckon Carrie Fisher will ever live that hair style down?
And yes, the Yahoo Serious look certainly rates a mention!

Despite being an actor, screenwriter and novelist, I think Carrie Fisher's fame mostly stems from that role and hairstyle.
Good to see you, hope the winter isn't too cold over there!

And that 'do'...the slick up....early Elvis was groovy, but Cameron Diaz took it to a new planet altogether...how amazingly brave of her to agree to do that by the way!! Most 'stars' wouldn't have, I am sure...how could anyone beat that???

I agree, Elvis did have a few fine coiffure moments, I like this one:
It seems like the Princess and the Bagel is winning.....
And yes, I think Cameron Diaz was very accommodating especially with those unique ingredients...

Fun!
Wish more hairstyles (not just movies) could be included, like Cher's 1986 Oscar outfit. Though, not sure if that was her hair...
Always, with Star Wars, I think of that hair..

Obviously this is a compilation of Kookiest styles and I love that Eraserhead made the cut.
Brad Pitt's hair in Johnny Suede always stood out for me or in the same vein Johnny Depp's do in Cry Baby. Johnny in Edward Scissorhands is also a stand up moment.
Liz Taylor in Cleopatra
Tom Cruises hair in Legend always makes me chuckle too

I hadn't even heard of Tom Cruise's Legend. What do you think of it? I read a few positive reviews about it so I'm curious.
Here's some samples of the ones you mentioned, thanks for your input:

I just watched another Lynch film the other day, a new one about an actress who is confusing her life with her character's life in a movie. It has a bunch of horrifyingly daunting Polish people in it.

That sounds like Inland Empire, I haven't seen that one yet. What did you think of it? I've heard mixed thoughts about it. Lynch is the master of perplexion isn't he?

And Id just like to nominate Helena Bonam Carter for always having the same haircut in every movie....Frankenstien, Merlin, Fight Club....For such a gorgeous woman, you'd think there would be ONE hairdresser that could make it look like something other than a spider web?

I agree that Helena seems to have a trademark mop that isn’t much different from a spider web. She doesn’t look much different off-camera than on-camera, hair-wise. I really like her though, she’s different from other generic actors and like you said, she’s beautiful.
I’m curious to see Legend, it doesn’t sound like a typical Tom Cruise film. It sounds good, I just read a bit more about it on IMDB. Thanks for that idea.
Thanks for popping in,
Tracy
PS There’s nothing wrong with having a thing for unicorns...

I disagree about Cruise being miscast....Tracy, you'll have to watch it and sort this out because I think its one of those male/Female gaps....I find him so genuine in the role, he's so dewy eyed and innocent....Certainly not the Tom we know of today. His expressions are earnest and involved....And Ive always had a thing for guys with long hair! In my opinion, you really believe he's just a gentle forest boy and I never found the hair giggle worthy, it was just perfect fairy tale hair.
Tracy, help me out! I want to know if you want to be rescued by him too!
