Food and films
November 21st 2007 04:16
On the weekend, I read an article about films that are interlinked with food in their title and content. Now, I might’ve been hungry or just being a piggy, but it set me wondering about how many similarly correlated films there could be out there.
So, after eating something boring: cereal (yes, it’s healthy but it was the weekend), I decided to do some research.
I’ve noticed that since I discovered the Bicycle Film Festival, I seem to keep looking for links between films and other objects.
So here’s a list of some of my findings, some with an additional cultural flavour. Feel free to make comments, disagree or salivate:
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) American
A Clockwork Orange (1971) British
Mystic Pizza (1988) American
American Pie (1999) American
Tampopo (1985) Japanese
Big Night (1996) American
Like Water for Chocolate (1993) American
Chocolate (2000) French
Bella Martha (2001) Italian
Babette's Feast (1987) Danish
Delicatessen (1991) French
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) French
Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (1980) German
There’s quite a few isn’t there? There are some curious sounding ones in there that I hadn’t heard of and would like to see such as Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Tampopo.
I’ve seen most of the others and would recommend them, especially A Clockwork Orange, Like Water for Chocolate, Chocolate, Bella Marta, Babette's Feast and The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover .
Well, I’m starved now so I’m off to see what's in my cupboards for some lunch, see you later.

Yes, I was hungry after doing this post. I've just had Thai food with a friend and now I want chocolate!!
They were good films you thought of, I've seen The Joy Luck Club and The Big Chill, but not Dinner Rush, might have a look to see what that one is about.
Hope you enjoy your food,
Tracy

I've seen the film, but am reading the book of Chocolat at the moment - and I swear it's having an effect on my sweet tooth! Somehow, a little box of Lindt chocolates made it into my shopping basket yesterday!
Now that I have discovered this, I don't think it would be a good idea for me to see Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe. My stilettoes might become endangered.

How about Breakfast at Tiffany's or Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Classics.
I suppose the whole "Spaghetti Western" genre doesn't count though - huh?

Those are fantastic ones. Like you said, they are classics and shouldn't be forgotten.
I’m always happy to extend the parameters of my posts, and I think I can stretch to Spaghetti Westerns..after all there is food in the title, it doesn’t have to be in its content.

Film & TV on DVD
The Last Supper is a really entertaining culinary delight full of mischievous politics and social comment.
Julie Taymor's Shakespeare adaptation of TItus also memorably brings food to the plot course.
9 and 1/2 Weeks must be mentioned for its use of sweet, sweet honey.

I'm also a huge fan of the sublime and sensual Tampopo (which means Dandelion).
There's also a French film called Chocolat, superb tale of sexual repression and forbidden love set in colonial Africa in the 50s by Claire Denis, but it's not really about food per se, more about the hunger for love and the devouring of lust.

It’s good to see you. I must say that I have never noticed that about Dirty Harry, but I know I’m always going to remember what you said. Maybe burgers were his comfort food?
I haven’t seen The Last Supper nor Julie Taymor's Shakespeare adaptation of Titus, I looked them up and they sound quite compelling with a definite emphasis on food.
How could I forget 9 and 1/2 Weeks? Shame on me.

Ah yes, I liked Eat Man Drink Woman too, thanks for the reminder. I haven’t seen La Grande Bouffe, so I’ll toddle off after this and read your review. I haven’t seen Chocolat, I like the sound of it and in general I like French films.

Glad you enjoyed the post.
Yes, I’m hungry too, but I can’t be bothered cooking...I wonder if anywhere does chocolate home deliveries? They should...
Enjoy your weekend,

I seem to have a shortage of chocolate at the moment I'm afraid...someone gobbled it all (and it wasn't me).

Hot Dog the Movie (a very bad 80's flick that I can vaguely recall)
Cool as Ice
Wow, even there are even some of my beloved 'terrible' movies with food themes!

Great idea for a post... and to get the tummies rumbling! I have also seen most of the films you mentioned, but not all so I'll hunt them down.
Recently 'No Reservations' wound its way into my favourite films list. I suppose 'What`s eating Gilbert Grape?' wasn`t really a film about food....
Hope you are well

I haven't seen Cool as Ice or Hot Dog, but I've seen American Pie a million times - it's one of those films isn't it? Plus, my husband loves it...

It’s good to see you, I’m well thanks, how about you?
I liked No Reservations too. Even though it was a bit predictable and Hollywoodish, I like some fluff every now and again for some escapism and fun.
I think 'What`s eating Gilbert Grape?’ counts, gosh that was a good film wasn’t it?

PS Yes, this post has made me hungry...
