Gus Van Sant Festival at Dendy Cinemas
February 26th 2008 05:30
Film festivals give viewers the chance to indulge and immerse themselves in the world that is being offered. A Gus Van Sant visual feast is coming to Dendy cinemas from February 29 – March 12, 2008 and I’ll be there. I’m no Van Sant expert but from the films I’ve already seen, My Own Private Idaho, Gerry, Drugstore Cowboy and Elephant, I’m hoping to expand my experiences. It is also our first opportunity in Australia to see Van Sant’s latest piece, Paranoid Park.
Van Sant, an independent filmmaker has made a name for himself both in mainstream as well as independent films. His accolades include a Best Director Academy Award nomination for Good Will Hunting (1997), Elephant (2003), the first film he directed was accepted into Cannes and won the festival's two most prestigious awards: the Palme d'or and best director and a DGA (Directors Guild of America) Nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement In Motion Pictures also for Good Will Hunting.
As well as writing most of the screenplays for his early films, he is also a published author, photographer and musician. He has released two albums and his novel, Pink, is believed to be a personal exploration of his grief over River Phoenix's 1993 death.
Much of his work focuses on gritty dramas about outsiders, often starring unknown actors. He has been quoted as saying, ‘I guess I'm interested in sociopathic people...in life and in my movies’.
The featured films include:
Paranoid Park
My Own Private Idaho
To Die For
Elephant
Last Days
Mala Noche
Gerry
Click onto the Dendy website if you would like more information.
Enjoy.

Its so strange to think he Directed such a formulaic effort as Good Will Hunting, not a terrible film but certainly one of his lesser efforts.
Looking forward to seeing Paranoid Park...isn't he Directing the Harvey Milk biopic at the moment with Sean Penn in the lead?

I haven't seen Last Days yet, but it's on my list. In an ideal world I'd see all these films I desire...ah well.
Maybe you'll catch more films once you start uni...English Lit sounds great.
Good to see you,
Tracy

Yes, Harvey Milk filming is happening at the moment. I just read that Van Sant waited over 10 years for it to happen, gosh. And before that we have 8 to look forward to sometime this year.
I just watched Elephant again yesterday, I can still feel its atmosphere.
Both Good Will Hunting and To Die For both seem like anomalies, but I admire his experiments.
Thanks for popping in,
Tracy

It's a pity you're so far away and can't enjoy it as well.
Idaho is one of my fave Van Sant films too, but for some reason I can't really remember Good Will Hunting.
Thanks for popping in,
