Video experiences - Men Behaving Badly
September 19th 2008 22:30
To celebrate the decision to have both a DVD player and a video in my life, and the revival of my Men Behaving Badly marathons, I thought I would share some vital moments with you.
In case you haven’t seen the program (if so, I would like to know what not), here’s a brief run-down on the important details that will skilfully ease you into its laughter chasm.
Men Behaving Badly embodies the bawdy, larrikin world of two principle characters: Gary (Martin Clunes) and Tony (Neil Morrissey). They live in a dank flat beset by untidy squalor and mismatched furniture. Much of its appeal is the deftly crafted dialogue written by Simon Nye.
Gary’s girlfriend, Dorothy (Caroline Quentin), lives in the flat upstairs with her friend Deborah (Leslie Ash). Dorothy is a quick-witted sometimes acid-tongued nurse. The pair frequently split up, is occasionally unfaithful, but always get back together. Gary runs a dead end, dreary burglar alarms sales office, with two old-fashioned, humming assistants, George and Anthea. Tony stumbles through numerous jobs including modelling, bar work and professional miming, after his record stall (literally) collapses. Tony is obsessed with Deborah, regularly claiming he loves her and would do anything for her, when really he wants to shag her. His drunken attempts meet with firm rebuttals for five years. Admirably or maybe stupidly, Tony’s attempts never falter.
They regularly and earnestly sit on the sofa discussing vitally important subjects such as top ten arses on telly, does a space ship need a glove compartment and why women should have breasts on their back as well as their front. Their main hobbies are drinking, drinking in the pub and drinking on the way home from the pub. Oh and watching telly and trying to meet Kylie Minogue.

It's not for everyone but I love it (which is probably obvious from this post).
Thanks for popping in!

I haven't seen this in quite some time, since its original run, I would say. It definitely has its moments, though I am not a devoted fan. Martin Clunes puts me off a bit.
When all is said and done, I'd take a Brit sitcom over an American one any day!

Does that mean you don't like Doc Martin if you're not keen on Clunes? I think the best thing about that prog is the scenery!
Oh I agree, British stuff is more subtly crafted and the audience isn't spoon fed.
Thanks for popping in,

I never really watched it, but then I haven't watched much tv at all for years... I know it's hugely popular in the UK and watching those clips, I can see why - funny because it's so believable

Im going to blaspheme and say i enjoyed the US version a lot more than the British. Probably because when i was in the UK people like this annoyed the hell out of me.

I’ve never seen the American version...now I’m curious. I'm sure there's excerpts on YouTube for me to look at.

Yes, most definitely poor Dorothy. But she is a strong woman and her drop-dead glares are most effective.

Thanks for popping in. Martin is completely different to other characters he's played in programs such as William and Mary and Doc Martin. In fact he's vastly different!

It's always good to meet a fellow fan. That must've been quite an experience to actually work with Martin Clunes.
Thanks for popping in, nice to meet you.
