Most used/overused phrases in films
November 9th 2007 23:56
If I say to you, ‘I'll be back’, I’m fairly sure that you will know the phrase and the film’s origins. Or maybe you’ll be glad I’m assuring you that I’m returning, for others it may be a scary thought.
I just read an article from www.news.com.au that says a British film study was conducted and the above idiom was given the title of ‘most commonly used film phrase.’ Just in case you don’t know it (and that is fair enough, I haven’t seen the film either), Arnold Schwarzenegger used it in The Terminator back in 1984. So, for 23 years people have been burbling out that well-used sentence. And Arnold Schwarzenegger kept to his word, he came back, three times.
Apparently, myfilms.com website, the UK Film Council's cinema and film finder, conducted the research using 2000 people. That’s not a huge study considering that Britain’s population is approximately 60,776,238, but it gives you an idea of what’s in people’s heads.
So here we have it, their Top 10 of most used film lines:
1. ‘I'll be back.’ The Terminator
2. ‘Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.’ Gone With The Wind
3. ‘Beam me up, Scotty.’ Star Trek
4. ‘May the force be with you.’ Star Wars
5. ‘Life is like a box of chocolates.’ Forrest Gump
6. ‘You talking to me?’ Taxi Driver
7. ‘Show me the money.’ Jerry Maguire
8. ‘Do you feel lucky, punk?’ Dirty Harry
9. ‘Here's looking at you, kid.’ Casablanca
10.‘Nobody puts Baby in the corner.’ Dirty Dancing
Apparently, number 8’s saying, ‘Do you feel lucky, punk?’ by Clint Eastwood is incorrect, the proper quotation is, 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?’
Oh,and you might notice that all the quotes are said by men. Apparently, women were drawn to films like Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman and Gone With The Wind . Well, apart from being female, I don’t fit those criteria.
This time I haven’t added my opinions (well, not many), I thought I would give you a raw list...but I must say that I didn’t find the results particularly surprising...

If only life was like a box of chocolates.
Between the two of us - and our almost scary thought processes of late - variety would be nice.

The quotes that I think are used too much (and incorrectly) so that they just become annoying:
Forrest Gump, Terminator, Star Wars, Jerry Maguire, and Dirty Harry ones you have there, plus:
"As if!"
- Clueless
"Yeah baby!"
- Austen Powers
"Bond, James Bond."
- Bond films
"I see dead people."
- The SIxth Sense
The weird noise Hannibal does.
- Silence of the Lambs
"Forget about it."
- Donnie Brasco
"Be afraid. Be very afraid."
- The Fly
"I know you are, but what am I?"
- Pee Wee's Big Adventure
"Would you do me a favour? Drop dead!"
- Born Yesterday
"Here's Johnny!"
- The Shining
"Wax on, wax off"
- The Karate Kid
"Excellent!"
- Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
"There's no place like home."
- The Wizard of OZ
"ET phone home!"
- ET

Yes, I read something about that in the article too....so it just came from similar quotes? Funny how these adaptations stick isn't it?

That is a brilliant find, whoever compiled it is very clever. And what a find, I don’t know how you find these gems, it’s brilliant. It's a post in itself!
I think your BlogSpot is excellent too, that's a great idea.
Thank-you for sharing,

That was exactly my reaction. And I wasn’t drawn to any of those ones that most women chose, Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman and Gone With The Wind. Dirty Dancing was corny but OKish, same with Pretty Woman (when I’m in the mood for fluff and don’t look at the troubling messages it portrays as David mentioned) and I haven’t seen Gone with the Wind. I am happy to be an atypical female.
Did you think of those quotes automatically or did you do some research? That’s an impressive list. Have you met people that do this:
The weird noise Hannibal does.
- Silence of the Lambs
That's an unusual one. I’ve never known anyone to do that and I don’t think I would want to...I have enough trouble getting in lifts now thanks to that film.
The one I find most annoying in your list is the ET one, as you said, it's been used too many times to be funny or original.
I never knew that ‘Here’s Johnny’ originates from The Shining. See, who said blogging was just a waste of time, it’s 10am on a Sunday morning and I’ve learnt several facts, I’m impressed. Maybe now I can go back to bed, that might be enough work for one day.
Thanks, Michaelie. ‘Tis a pleasure as always,

How about these?
Titanic": Leonardo DiCaprio's "I'm the king of the world!"
Dirty Dancing": Patrick Swayze's "Nobody puts Baby in the corner."
"Top Gun": Val Kilmer to Tom Cruise: "You can be my wingman anytime."
"Jerry Maguire": Renee Zellweger to Tom Cruise: "You had me at hello." or "You complete me."
Great Post friend!

You have some good ones in there....did you have to think much about them or are they there ready to be divulged?
I have to admit that sometimes my husband adapts the Patrick Swayze's "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" adage quite effectively by putting my name into it if I’m feeling distressed, e.g. if I’m feeling unsure about whether to do something or not (if it’s something I feel I ought to do for someone, but don’t want to, yet feel guilty), he sometimes says ‘nobody puts Tracy in the corner’. It’s corny and ridiculous but I like it. At the same time, it makes me feel safe as when I was younger there were times when I needed that. But that’s a whole other post...and that was a really long sentence.
Do you know I’ve never seen Top Gun? I didn’t see it at the time as there was so much hype and now I don’t see the point.
There’s a few phrases from Jerry Maguire, obviously they had a few catchphrases that were easy to remember and adapt.
I don’t remember Leonardo Cabanossi saying that in Titanic, but I can imagine it.
Thanks, Mis, always a pleasure!
PS My friend calls Patrick, Cross-eyed Swayze...it's a bit mean but we love it and I'm not hurting him as I don't think he's reading this post...

QUOTE ME NO QUOTES!
"Why don't ya come up and see me some time?"
"Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?"
There are many more. What is brilliant about Mae West was, she wrote all her own lines, she wrote a paly titled "SEX!" and it was forced to close before opening, when asked if it was all about sex, she had to admit it was just an advertising ploy to get it in the papers!
West also acted alongside the great W.C.Fields, in many a comedy, his favourite line to her was, "My little chickadee!"
So, there you go! Famous quotes, spoken and writtten by a woman, and done all so many many years ago!!!
cheers

P.S. Don't overload my "Fog Flees the Sundowners", parts 1 & 2, with too many comments praising my comedic genius folks...takes far too long for me to read them all!!! ho hum!

There is some serious Orble synchronicity going on...I wrote this post about half an hour after Mr Nice Guy wrote his on memorable film quotes, so our post were eerily similar. And the quote that I added to his was the Mae West one you just said.....
I didn’t know Mae wrote her own lines, what a woman. I like that.

And yes, I have known far too many people who feel the need to do the Hannibal thing. Lol.

I am a total movie whore so I had them in the arsenal.
Love your "Tracy in the corner" story. Made me laugh!
Watch "Top Gun" gal for the volleyball scene and skip the rest.
Enjoyed this post so much!

Well, that is impressive that you had all that info locked in your head, gosh.
Maybe I will do this:
Watch "Top Gun" gal for the volleyball scene and skip the rest.
The only thing is I've developed quite an intense dislike for Tom Cruise, some days I can barely look at him. But...maybe that scene is on YouTube...I could handle a snippet so I might look it up, thanks.
Good to see you,

How about anything from Austin Powers? Ugh...
I love Gone with the Wind. It's my favorite! The book was good, too.
If you like epic pieces (and have roughly six hours to kill) rent it.
