My laptop ate my review

January 9th 2008 23:00
My laptop ate my review

Yesterday I wrote a review on Running with Scissors and today it’s vanished. It’s inside my laptop somewhere, I just can’t find it. I’ve tried tipping it upside down and nothing fell out. I did all the things I’m supposed to do...I know I did, I’m no novice, so where is it?

I’ve looked, moaned, sang and sworn (sorry neighbours), but for now, I’m leaving it. I’m off out.

Why laptop, why?

Did you give it a good kick, I loved the turnded it upside down and shook it, usually that makes everything fall out. I'd put the cat on the mouse if I were you, the cat is the natural predator of the mouse, shall I ask Crystal to take Tinkerbelle over to see you?

Lovely post, just the length of my attention span.

Looks like you get to do it again baby, I feel for you, a gentle tear falls onto my cheek and cascades forwards releasing its brother and sister who follow, opening the flood gates behind them as they grieve and mourn your loss, see, I do have a heart. But don't worry my hearts never last long.

Soon this comment will be longer than your post, do I get the money?

Pour coffee into it's innards and just maybe with the influx of caffeine, it's memory will recall where the hell it stored your file, Tracy. Raven

ha, i feel your pain, my first essay I EVER wrote on a computer way back when, got swallowed up: it was an essay for a communications subject, so I naturally saved it as a .com file.....it turned into a file of cimputer language...........yes there were tears, and screaming at my ex who had forced me to use the dam thing,,,,,,anyhow i learnt to love computers

Hence my love of a good old pen and paper...
I sometimes wonder how I can depend so utterly on something about which I understand so little. Backup, backup, backup. We writers never learn.
Sympathies, it's happened to us all

That's the best laugh I've had for ages, great commentators, do you pay them? I'm still laughing, glad Louie gave ex the flick. Woman power.

I hate when technology does that to you. I know the feeling of having an assignment swallowed up. I swear it just wasn't as good the second time around!

Oh Tracy, I'm so sorry... this is the kind of thing that sends me into anaphalectic shock.

Oh Tracy, I'm so sorry... this is the kind of thing that sends me into anaphylactic shock… ghastly, beastly behaviour from the laptop … a moment to reflect and find out why the universe blocked that move (I’m always left wondering if it is to help me practice ‘moving on?)

I hope the wee beastie gives it up soon…

Big hug

Oh this is hilarious, Tracy darling it's not your fault, no need to cover your face up like that, I love it.

Well, Tracy, you went Running With Scissors and now you've stabbed yourself in the foot.

Don't worry, your second attempt will be even better and this time you will BACK UP WOMAN! Losing anything is awful, especially work. Every now and then I get a real scare that I've lost everything.

About a month ago a dreamt the house burnt down and I lost everything I had written, so the next day I copied it all on a USB and took it to my parents' house.

Looking forward to your review when you get over your very understandable bitterness and manage to make peace with your computer again!

I think Michaelie summed it up well:
Well, Tracy, you went Running With Scissors and now you've stabbed yourself in the foot.

I think we've all experienced this at one time or another!

Hopefully it will turn up soon.

In 'cyberspace' no-one can hear you scream.

Don't you hate that . . .

Stay sane

is it still on your laptop, or has it been deleted?

Sometimes, Microsoft Word saves a backup in the same directory as the file - that way, if your computer crashes, you can retrieve it...

otherwise, Orble saves backups, too, if you were typing it in the Orble editor...

Hello katyzzz, Raven, Bryn, Louie, Miswanderlust, KylieW , Joanne, Justicia, Lilla, Krystal, Michaelie, MelissaA, Mr MNG, Cibbuano and Lily.

Thank-you for letting me vent and moan and for making me laugh. That was just what I needed.

That’ll teach me to do some late night writing without backing it up. I usually back up after a few days work, maybe I need to do it after each piece or was this just a random universe occurrence?

Ah well, I found some notes so at least that’s something I can salvage and use.

This hasn’t got the better of me, I’ll be back to it soon.

Thanks everyone, have a great weekend,

Tracy

PS Cib, the back-up copy that Word makes was just an old copy/notes, so the final one was defintely eaten. Ah well....

Awww Tracy I hear you!

This has to be one of the most frustrating things about computers (in my eyes they have quite a few!). I lost some writing the other night too and was gutted.

These things are sent to test us that`s for sure!

Hi Ash

Sorry to hear you lost work too, it's horrible isn't it? Sometimes technology really has its moments,

Either I am completely inept or the technology world is after me...I wrote individual answers to all the comments and then they disappeared.

I can't blame the laptop this time, there’s no correlation except for the common denominator of me, lovely old me. It's enough to make me paranoid.

I’m sorry, I don’t have it in me to recreate the answers, I hope my collective thanks and appreciation will be enough.

Hi Anon

All the comments are real, I can't afford to pay them for their time

They definitely helped to ease my pain.
