My New Year quandary

January 7th 2008 01:43
My New Year quandary

It’s a small quandary, nothing life-threatening, but it’s still a decision. I have three new 2008 diaries to choose from. Each year I choose my diary with a theme in mind. Last year I had the Mind, Body and Spirit Book of Days, the year before was a Lonely Planet one and before that, a Yoga and Meditation diary.

My diary needs to be more than simply a calendar in a book. It’s my companion when I’m waiting, my inspiration when I’m fed up, my ruse when I’m waiting in a café for a late friend and a source of information for keeping my life flowing. It also needs to be colourful and be linked to my life and beliefs, for instance a Finance Diary with tips on how to make money would not be for me, most definitely not. I don’t know if such diaries are made, that was just a random thought that dropped out of me and onto the keyboard.

My options this year are the 2008 Mind, Body and Spirit Book, The Lonely Planet 2008 and The Australian Women’s Healthy Diary 2008. They are all excellent choices, with alluring themes and if a world existed where I could amalgamate all three, I would do that. Inspiration, travel, health are all vital parts of my life that I am happy to have in my handbag.

Well, I’ve decided to stick with my own, original choice and have a second year with the Mind Body and Spirit Book. It is more than just a diary; it is almost an interactive guide to personal growth with inspirational quotes and reminders, aimed at setting aside inhibitions and looking forward at unknown steps with zeal and confidence. I use it for those in-between moments for some centring or conscious change or inspiration.

Its opening quote by Oscar Wilde with his reliably blunt yet concise words captured me: 'Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.’

The Mind Body and Spirit book continues to say: ‘This year, do the unexpected. Dare to be yourself – and more. Don’t impose limits on yourself: the possibilities are too vast. It’s time to lose that shrinking-violet self-image for good and to see yourself as you really are-strong, independent and ready to soar.’

According to Persian poet Fakhruddin Iraqi, our world is,‘a dance of shadows, a line drawn between darkness and light, joy and oppression, time and eternity. Learn to read this subtle line for it tells all the secrets of creation.’

I have chosen my first challenge from the book: ‘Be a creative contrarian. Make a decision to respond in ways no one expects. When your urge is yes, say no. When you habitually jump back, jump in. Keep silent if you are usually bold. As you consciously take the opposite path from the one that you’re conditioned to follow, notice the ways in which your life opens up.

Watch out world, I'm making some changes...

Well right, I'm off, I was going to leave a comment but I'm now doing the reverse, so cop that.!

Tracy, once around is enough, you need to move forward, I would have chosen the health one for YOU.

Just a thought that bounced off the screen back at me. In an unguarded moment from my secret garden and the thought or my being a shrinking violet gives me enormous pleasure touched in shades of fantasy.

katyzzz....spiirt of things to come calling.

I would've chosen The Lonely Planet diary if I had to choose on cover alone, but I think the Mind, Body and Spirit Book is a good choice. I like all those short, motivational snippets mainly because I'm a habitual procrastinator and I have an attention span that would rival the memory of a gold fish (*sheepish grin*).

Good to see you're starting the year on a positive note, Tracy. Have a good one~

Rusty.

Well, if there was a horse on the cover, that would be my choice

I have to say I go for artwork, and I like the cover of the Mind Body Spirit diary.

Whichever one you choose Tracy, may you fill the days with lots of fun this coming year.

Mind Body Spirit for sure! Feel like buying one myself, but I already have my very sensible plain black diary for the year, with all my people's birthdays and things marked in!

Hi katyzzz

I know what you mean about choosing the Health one. It really came down to those two, so I've decided to have the Mind, Body and Spirit Book one as my main one and as a general springboard to better health via the mind. Plus as it’s smaller, it’s more portable (my handbag is already lumpy and bursting out).

I’ll keep the Health one here at home near the computer as a reminder. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the Lonely Planet one, that decision hasn’t come to me yet.

I think I'm happy with my decision!

Thanks for popping in,

Tracy

Hi Rusty

Thanks for popping in.

I can also be a professional procrastinator (I wish there were jobs for people like us), so that’s why the inspirational, creativeness of the Mind, Body and Spirit appealed to me. But I love the Lonely Planet one too...although it does make me yearn to toddle off and travel again...and again...ah well..

I'd quaff a few root beers, head to the local hang out and have a few conversations the inhabitants and learn about the lives of those around me Tracy.

I've often thought about setting up a table, with an umbrella, a few chairs and a sign inviting folks to share their life stories with me. This would include the provisioning of a pot of beans and rice, coffee, tea, juice or water and feed those that may be hungry; just let folks snack, be themselves and chat while I interview them. Oh, I did that already, it was a shocker what folks will share, and it makes for great reading.

Hiya Trace

What a quandry! I love how your diary guides you through the year. I really must learn to be more organised - mine wouldn`t last a week before it would be forgotten.

Sounds like you have made the right choice. Love the flying carpets - anything is possible!

Hope your year is the best ever!

Hi Catherine

I know what you mean, if there were a fluffy pooch on one of the covers, then my decision would be made too.

Nice to meet you and thanks for your wishes,

Tracy

Hi Raven

I like your style, you would definitely get to know people if you did that. Where would the table be, near your house or somewhere else? It’s a fascinating idea.

Hi Ash

I hadn’t thought of the flying carpet in that way, I'd only thought of it in the travelling sense, I love that interpretation. Yes definitely I agree, anything is possible, it’s a new year after all.

Hope you have a great year too,

Trace

Hello Mich

I’m happy to have some company with my choice.

You’re very organised having all that info in there already, I’ll have to start doing that soon too.

Hope you have a brilliant year,

Trace

Mind, Body, Spirit journal can probably help you maintain balance for 2008. Blogging, living, and loving takes a lot out of a gal!
