Reno 911!: Miami - a preview
May 7th 2007 22:58
Reno 911!: Miami is created by writers Garant, Lennon and Kenney-Silver of the sketch troupe,Reno 911!. Both the program and film are a parody of the reality program Cops.
The terminally foolish and horny deputies of the Reno Sheriffs Department take a bus to Miami to attend a law enforcement convention, only to discover that the rest of the conventioneers are trapped inside the convention centre after a bioterrorist threat. They are then entrusted to look after the unsupervised city of Miami. A scary thought….
The team is an assorted bunch of incompetent police members who manage to bust a crime ring while keeping up with their good-natured sexual antics and unplanned disasters. Paul Rudd, Danny DeVito, Paul Reubens and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson appear in surprise cameo roles that somewhat heighten the dysfunctional humour.
Like most sketch-comedy movies, Reno 911!: Miami is more amusing than hilarious. Thomas Lennon, resplendent in shorts so tight they would shame Daisy Duke, is especially entertaining, as is Raineesha Williams’ enormous posterior, a well-created prosthetic. As with traditional cop dramas there are soap-opera twists and turns galore. Each time the team look as though they have a grip on the town’s antics, it soon goes pear-shaped. They tussle with half-naked drunks, don drastically ill-advised underwear and leap around trying prove their control.
The film has some strong moments, you just have to sift through numerous misfired gags to get to them. It has the obligatory projectile vomit scene that was enough to make the audience groan and look away, or me anyway. There are lots of bums, boobs and big hairstyles. This is a bawdy and exaggerated film that isn’t for everyone, but it does induce a few laughs which I welcomed after seeing Noise the day before.

My kids love the t.v. show, and though it took me a while to finally indulge, I must admit, I laughed like crazy. I don't watch it regularly (nor do the kids), but I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. Where the movie's concerned, I'll probably end up seeing it twice... once to scan for (our understanding of) inappropriate material, and again with the kids (teens).

It's funny how timing works sometimes...I hadn't even heard of the program but when I got the opportunity for the preview, I thought it would be good to see something different. After writing it, I spotted it on the Comedy Channel....
It was good for a laugh, it sounds like you'd enjoy the film

It seems we were at the same preview, wish I would have known so I could have said "Hi in real life".
Nice review by the way.

Y'know I was wondering if you were there...I nearly got up and said 'is there a John Doe in the house?' but I'm too timid for that. It would've been great to meet in person, maybe the next time...
Your review was great as always and thanks for mentioning me.
The film was a bit of a laugh wasn't it? I'd seen Noise the day before and that was dark and heavy so I welcomed the change (even though for some of it I just groaned rather than laughed).
