Russell Crowe in a new Al-Qaeda film
July 2nd 2007 02:25
This is a bit of deviation from my usual film posts, especially as I don't really hold Crowe in high regard, but it did catch my attention. It’s also a slightly cynical post, which does cause some glee for me.
Oscar-winner Russell Crowe is to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in a new thriller about a hunt for an al-Qaeda bomber. Reports say that Crowe will play a manipulative CIA spymaster who teams up with an agent played by DiCaprio in the film Body of Lies directed by Ridley Scott. The film is an adaptation of a novel by David Ignatius.
According to Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, filming will begin later this year.
Crowe who won an Oscar in 2001 for his performance in Gladiator, has worked regularly with director Scott in recent years. As well as Gladiator, Crowe has just completed Scott's American Gangster, due out later this year, and will also team with the director in a differing Robin Hood movie called Nottingham. That sounds like it could have some potential.
I discovered a strong admiration for Crowe in his role in Romper Stomper. What a film that is, it blew me away. His other films that are notable for me are Proof, The Sum of Us and A Beautiful Life. There are some that I haven’t seen so in all fairness I can’t give an opinion on them. In all non-fairness, I suspect many are dodgy (and that's being kind) after reading their synopsises and seeing trailers. I'm no expert on his filmography so there may be a few goodies in there that I've missed. Feel free to tell me about them. I don't feel too bad about my assumptions as this is a blog with the freedom of being cynical (that statement is almost my disclaimer for many things).
Without any doubt, I do have a fervid dislike for his band, 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts. My friend calls it Thirty Foot of Shit and I must agree. They are crap. They should bury their music thirty foot down in dirt never to be dug up again.
Nonetheless, a film depicting anything about al-Qaeda has an air of interest to me, how will they do it, will it be overdone, will it be biased (I think I can answer that question) and will it tell us anything we don’t already know? I would love to be impressed as well as learning some new information about the situation.

He can play a believeable nice guy.
That is really hard for a guy like him.

Russell is a great actor. He was fantastic as himself in Romper Stomper, but he proved himself as an 'actor' in A Beautiful Mind. Even if that film was titled I Wish I Had A Mind it wouldn't have put me off his acting abilities. He's a part owner of the Rabbitohs RL Club. I mean that's acting at its height. To believe they will get anywhere due to his financial influence and investment, and get into character to promote them? That's acting at its best.
Oh, btw, He's a New Zealander. So I forgive him. He's an all-white, non All-Blacks supporter in my books. No wonder he calls himself Australian after Saturday night's Bledisoe Cup. No wonder he chose Rugby League over Rugby. He didn't want to get on the wrong side of Dusk?

I thought he was superb in Romper Stomper, like I said I was just astounded. He did that so well and would recommend that film to anyone. It says so much, far more than I'm able to put into a coherent sentence at the moment as I think I need some lunch. He was also very good in the other films I mentioned: Proof, The Sum of Us and A Beautiful Life. I think A Beautiful Life would've been a challenging film to act in, it looked like it would need a lot of research and immersing in the role.
I still do think some of the others sound questionable to me, like the fairly recent A Good Year. I just looked at his films again and realised that I can also add Proof to my list of films where I think he is a good actor. I think it's his outside film antics I'm not so keen on, or maybe it's his facial hair.....all plausible reasons I think. Oh and I won't change my mind on his singing high-jinks (where did I get that phrase from?).
I knew he was a New Zealander and like you, I don't hold that against him. I have no idea about the difference between rugby and rugby league...so I have no opinion on that, but it's definitely interesting hearing more about it.
See you,
Tracy

Yes, they are...such a brave decision to try to create a film and see how it goes. Must take a lot of money, tenacity and hopes, plus much more.

Russell Crowe.
'Gladiator' (Maximus) = Rugby
'Romper Stomper' (Hando) = league

I'm well thanks, how are you?
I'm sensing you're not keen on the old Crowe or have I misunderstood you? (perfectly possible).
And ah, rugby league is harsher?

There is something about Russell Crowe that sets my teeth on edge. Can't put my finger on it. I love Leo though so I will definitely will see the movie.
