Films you love when you are sick....
August 3rd 2007 07:42
It seems that a few of us have been sick lately and I was wondering what films we turn to when we are bed-ridden and probably a bit fed up. I tend to search for easily digestible films that I can rely on for a laugh without using my brain too much. But today I wondered which films other people like to watch when they are sick?
Last year when we were in Cambodia and Vietnam we had HBO in many of the places we stayed in. I ended up seeing various excerpts of The Cable Guy about four times (the repetition of cable wore me down). There was a particular scene where Jim Carrey pronounced penis as penith with his strong lisp and for some reason (maybe it was the heat), I found it completely hysterical.
I found it strange that I liked the film so much as I’m not a huge Jim Carrey fan, I think he’s talented but he generally amuses me rather than make me snort with laughter. If I like a film an actor is in, it doesn’t mean that I will like everything they do. Anyhoo, I digress. I laughed my socks off at the film and in particular the ‘penith’scenes. And when my husband started to do superb renditions of ‘penith’ I was even more hysterical.
So, can you think of a film/s that you have a similar fondness for? It can be tacky, crude, meaningful, anything you like. I’d love to hear about it/them.
Here’s an excerpt of The Cable Guy, I couldn’t find my favourite scene so this will have to do.
Hope you enjoy it.

It's Tracy here, for some reason I can't log into my own blog!
I know what you mean about crying at films that are supposed to be funny. I've done that a few times and I've even cried at soapies on telly like Neighbours for no good reason (and yes, I'm embarassed).
Did the tears help?

I know what you mean. I don't like being sick at all. All I can think about are the things I could be doing. But I'm trying to look at it a different way (as I have to be off work for a fortnight), so I've got a stash of books and some films lined up that I can review on my book, so at least I'm still feeling useful in some way. Although I am still doing the housework, walking the dog, shopping and all those other things!!
That's great that you're generally healthy, it must help.

QUOTE ME NO QUOTES!
However, if not too depressed, but enough to feel out of sorts, I like to watch comedies, which I usually do not laugh at, but still like to watch them...like the ridiculous Grimwalds in National Lampoon series....ok...I laughed at him catching the snake on his fishing line...and maybe a few other moments in those long winded try hards..Steve Martin, oh and LOVE Austin Powers!!!
I also love watching movies where we whip ET's arse......no not THAT ET...it was cute...awful costume though, but a great film, when ET is a nasty, like Independance Day...schmaltzy over cooked flag waving nonsense, but I still like it when we beat em (ok, so its when America, Britain, Iraq(!) and Israel beat em, coz poor old Aussie is just loafing by the harbour watching the space ship consume the Eastern Suburbs...not a bad idea..
Also love romantic comedies...4 Weds and a funeral, love upper class twats...knew a few when young, and usually one thinks of film exaggerating things, but when it comes to English upper class twats...they get it right every time!
I also love all the old Ealing Studio films, the ones with all the great old English actors, Alastair Sim, Sir Ralph Richardson, Sir Alec Guiness, Peter Sellers...."Kind Hearts and Coronets", "The Lady Killers" "The Lavender Hill Mob" etc
they take me to a safer time and place, in my childhood, when I adored escaping into "the box", or the picture theatre screen, Mary Poppins, Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, The Mouse That Roared....Doctor Zhivargo...I could go on...oh...the original black and white Carry On Movies..."MAAAAATRON!!!!".... and must not forget Terry Thomas, James Robertson Justice, Jerry Lewis (whom I met and talked to all night many years ago!)) and Dean Martin, all the old rat Pack movies, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn, Ma and Pa Kettle, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, etc etc etc
exhausted now....and I want to see so many of them right now...and the Saint Trinians movies...so much fun...oh well....don't have cable, so its off to the store for me...

Thanks for all your comments, you sound like you have thought about it a lot before. I know what you mean about having bouts of depression, in those times I think you do what you can do, even if it’s just getting out of bed and having a cuppa.
I like the actors you mentioned, like Steve Martin and Chevy Chase, they definitely make me chuckle. Do you have all your faves on DVD/video? I’m starting to do that now. I also like romantic comedies too, they’re safe and make me laugh without too much brainwork.
I haven’t heard of a couple that you mentioned so I’m going to look them up now.
Thanks again and have a good day,
Tracy

yeah this flu seems awful doesn`t it? My sister has been sick for 3 weeks now with it. I hope you feel better.
When I am sick I like the 'Teen Flick' sort of films... easy on the brain as you say. Or romantic comedies. It`s not great when you have a cough and watch an overly hysterical film and end up missing half of it while you recover from a coughing attack though!
I must admit I`m not a Jim Carrey fan, although I didn`t mind that theatre one he was in.. can`t recall the name now. I think the 'Ace Ventura' films turned me off him. I like his 'SHMOKIN' stint he does in 'The Mask' though!
I remember watching a film when I was a teen called 'Pure Luck' with Martin Short and Danny Glover. Try as I might I cannot find it anywhere and I remember thinking it was the funniest movie I have seen. I haven`t seen it in about 15 years so I don`t know if my view on it would have changed.
Get better soon!

It's good to see you. That's awful that your sister has been sick for so long, is she nearly better? Did you have it too?
I didn't have the flu but had to be in hospital for a few days and now everyone is very strictly telling me all the things I can't do!!! So thank goodness for Orble
I know what you mean about Jim Carrey, I think he's talented but he hasn't done films that I would watch over and over. But there was something about the Cable Guy that got me.
Yes, I like the romantic, easy to watch kind of films. I laughed when you said about having a coughing fit through films that are funny, that would be painful (as well as annoying I would imagine).
I just looked up Pure Luck as I wasn’t sure if I’d seen it or not. It doesn’t sound familiar. That would be interesting to see it now and find out what you think of it. You could do a film experiment (if you have time, I know you’re busy).
Thanks for your comments,

When I'm sick? I love the entire Family Guy series, from season 1 onwards. LOVE IT !! That, or the Sopranos, and American Pie and Road Trip have never let me down. I love my movies so much !
Thanks for the lovely post !

I know what you mean, I tend to go for programs rather than films when I’m sick. I generally don’t have the attention span for a whole film.
That’s great that your faves have never let you down!

I'm glad your sister is better, that must've been a bad bout. And I'm glad you didn't get it too.

That's an interesting choice, I like hearing all the different films people turn to. So do you have a collection at home for when you're sick?

I have Pride and Prejudice (all 6 hours of it), Mansfield Parek, Emma, and Persuasion. Yes I only watch them when I am ill. HEHEHEE!
Mis
(If Jane Austen doesn't do it then I pull out Talledega Nights!)

I love Pride and Prejudice too, I haven’t seen the others one, but I’m sure I will one day.
What’s Talladega Nights like, is that a comedy? I’ve only vaguely heard of it.
Have you ever watched the Jane Austen ones when you’re not sick, I wonder if you would notice a difference?
Thanks for popping in,
Tracy
