The things people do in cinemas

November 17th 2006 09:40

Just because the lights dim, it doesn’t mean it’s OK to fondle your girlfriend in the same aisle as me. The slurping noises make it hard for me to hear the film.

Or chomp on your popcorn ALL the way through the film and then make that clicky noise trying to get the annoying remnants out of your back molars.

Or have a complete McDonalds meal and stink out the room. Snacks are expected but full meals are not. It’s mean and makes me hungry even though fast food is always my last port of call.

Oh and for all those leaners, stick to your own chair. We have one arm each unless we know each other and it's negotiated. Even then I might change my mind.

Chatters, save it for later!! This is not a cafe.

And as for mobile phone usage, don't!

I almost forgot about toe-tappers and chair nudgers. Please refrain, it's really tiresome.

This is my message; the cinema is not your lounge-room, take your annoying habits home where they should stay!!

What atrocities have you encountered in a cinema trip?

I read an account from an ex-Hoyts employee who quit shortly after discovering the full contents of a mega-size popcorn spilled on the floor, with a choc-top embedded on top of the pile.

I get really annoyed by people who proudly participate in the audience reaction stakes - I tend to watch a film quietly, even if it's a comedy.

No wonder the employee left, there's no need for that sort of senseless tomfoolery. Yeah, I don't like it when people clap, it's not as though the people on the screen can hear.

You just listed all the reasons why I only go to the movies early in the day...

Hi Lizard68591

That's a great idea, does it work? It sounds like it would. I also try and avoid the really packed sessions for films like Lord of the Rings and other big Hollywood films (that I don't see very often anyway).

Hi Cib

Are you pro-clapping or anti-clapping..I wasn't sure...

How about the idiots that clap at the previews. Case in point - the Rocky preview this weekend before Casino Royale

Do they think that any of the creative forces behind the flick are hiding out in the theater???

Hi Lizard68591

I know clapping isn't the biggest sin in the world, but it does seem rather silly in the cinema environment. I can't help but wonder why people do it, as like you said is there a team of people involved hidden behind the curtain that would appreciate the recognition? It's not the worst cinema misdemeanour, but it's definitely peculiar if you ask me.

I took my kids to see Happy Feet last weekend, and a couple in the row in front of us spent half the film snogging (it's a kids movie for crying out loud!) and then left.

Get a room?

As for clapping, there are appropriate situations - my last short screened at the Chauvel last week, and most of the crew were in the crowd. No applause would have been very rude!

And for highly anticipated premieres eg the midnight screenings of the last three Star Wars films were rooms full of big time fans. There was much applause and cheering when the lights went down and the big yellow letters came up. Less about applauding the creatives behind the film, and more about "Hey! Isn't this cool?!"

Not very as it turns out, but we weren't to know at the time ;o)

Hi yoda76

Gosh, I don't think Happy Feet is the place for a snog at all. In fact, like you said people should just get a room...

I agree clapping has its place in some situations. I think clapping at previews or a locally made film is great, I can imagine a lot of hard work goes into it and a clap from the audience would be appreciated. Congratulations on your piece being shown at the Chauvel, that's great!

Hi W

I went to see Troy in Bucharest in Romania, very large crowd in a very large and shabby cinema. The movie was subtitled so the patrons sat and chatted to each other and took and made mobile phone calls through the whole movie as to them it didnt matter they could just read the dialogue, it was interesting.........

Hi Miss Nomer

I would love to go to Romania...your story made me laugh, people obviously enjoyed seeing a film that way and I suppose if everyone was doing it, it would almost be the norm? It's set me pondering about different cultures and cinemas....

Thanks for dropping in,

Tracy

I will always remember with a shudder the time when I was caught in the middle of a popcorn crossfire between two gangs of hostile teenagers. I'm only glad they only used popcorn! Another cinema pet peeve of mine is when someone tall - and with my 5'0 heigh, everyone seems tall - sits directly in front of me and moves around constantly, so I have this massive black round blob moving around at the bottom of the screen!

I have that pet peeve with bigger people sitting in front of me too, Aimzster, especially when there are other chairs they could plonk their bums in. I also don't believe in hats in cinemas.

I hate chair kickers....urghhhh...that is a huge pet hate of mine and it's not limited to the cinema, it could be anywhere.

Your popcorn war sounds awful...what did you do, could you move?

Hya Tracy, unfortunately it was too packed and the rest of the crowd was quite restless. We decided to just pack up and leave, prepared to crawl on all fours to avoid the popcorn cannonballs.

I think that was the brave and sensible thing to do, Aimzster. There are times when I've wondered why I haven't done that...maybe it's the money? I wonder if the ticket people would allow us to see a different film in those cases? Hmm, that's a thought, I'll try and bear in mind for my next annoying cinema expereince.

Thanks for your comments,

Tracy

This thread is pretty boring but id like to say that i was at the movies once and i saw a mouse on the way in. The mouse was on the street but imagine if it came into the cinema while i was watching Suart Little. I could have had a shock thinking that the mouse was actually Stuart Little in person. I hope this was just a once off incident that will not be repeated in the future.

Thanks for listening,

I am infuriated. i was kicked out of "passion of the christ" for playing burger-time on my game boy. i was almost going to beat my brother ruben's high score when some silly old bag began crying out for the steward to "eject" me from the cinema. silly old cow. would i call for the stewart if the silly old bag was knitting in star wars: revenge of the sith? no. i wish i had a robot with drill finger that was my slave so that i could persuade people into not ejecting me from places, like the time i was kicked out of religion class for masturbating. big deal - i't natural and everyone should embrace the activity. if we weren't meant to masturbate, then we would not have been born with a penile erection and testicles (except for females who don't even have one - haha). anyway, ever since that day at the cinema, i refuse to go to them anymore.

pump it,
