Total Film Magazine's Top 50 Heroes

Aha, I found another list even though I wasn’t looking. It found me. I love lists. I should do a list of my favourite lists. I should also probably count the number of times I used the word in that sentence. Ah well.

This one is by Total Film Magazine. With reader feedback they compiled the 100 Greatest Heroes and Villains of all time.

Being a positive kind of girl, I thought I would start with the Top 50 Heroes.

I also thought I should share my favourites from the list with you. I have a massive total of five: Indiana Jones, Donnie Darko, James Bond and Thelma and Louise .

Most of my 'hero' characters aren't up there, such as Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, Peter Dinklagein The Station Agent, Brenda Blethyn in Secrets and Lies, Bruce Jones in Raining Stones (in fact many characters in any of Ken Loach’s films) and Shawn Ku from Samsara.

As always, the list is open to discussion, rejection, repulsion or applause. Go wild.

1 Indiana Jones
2 Batman
3 Rocky Balboa (Rocky)
4 James Bond
5 Superman
6 Luke Skywalker (Star Wars)

7 Spiderman
8 Neo (The Matrix)
9 Han Solo (Star Wars)
10 The Incredible Hulk/Bruce Banner
11 Donnie Darko
12 Maximus Decimus Meridius (Gladiatior)
13 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
14 Jason Bourne (The Bourne Identity)
15 Spartacus
16 Wolverine (X-Men)
17 Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings)
18 George Bailey (It's a Wonderful Life)
19 Philip Marlowe (Murder, My Sweet)
20 Mr Lee (Enter the Dragon)
21 Cherry Darling (Planet Terror)
22 John McClane (Die Hard)
23 Rick Deckard (Blade Runner)
24 Lassie
25 Dewey Finn (School of Rock)
26 Bree (Transamerica)
27 Mr Davis (12 Angry Men)
28 Thelma and Louise
29 Virgil Tibbs (In the Heat of the Night)
30 Optimus Prime (The Transformers: The Movie)
31 Clarice Starling (The Silence of the Lambs)
32 The Terminator
33 Ashitaka (Princess Mononoke)
34 Elle Woods (Legally Blonde)
35 Father Merrin (The Exorcist)
36 Rooster Cogburn (True Grit)
37 Kenji Watanabe (Ikiru)
38 The Tramp (City Lights)
39 The Man with No Name (A Fistful of Dollars)
40 Ellen Ripley (Alien)
41 Laurie Strode (Halloween)
42 Spongebob Squarepants
43 Rachel Stein/Ellis de Vries (Black Book)
44 Jefferson Smith (Mr Smith goes to Washington)
45 Sheriff John T Chance (Rio Bravo)
46 John Shaft
47 Sarah Connor (The Terminator)
48 David Dunn (Unbreakable)
49 Rick Blaine (Casablanca)
50 Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird)

Oh, Jason Bourne should defintely be much further up that list......oh, for so many many reasons - most of which I cannot discuss on here

Not the list I would have made, but I'm glad they included Bree from Transamerica - definitely a heroine of a kind, I reckon. Maybe a heroine standing up for her belief in her own identity and just being a genuine person fighting a tough everyday battle to find happiness, as so many people do... though not necessarily in this way.

Hi tracy

Wow I ahven`t even heard of some of these films. Am seriously lacking in the movie watching department me thinks

Indian Jones... yum-a-licious! He could swoop down to rescue me any time. And Batman - it`s something about that mask with just the mysterious eyes and brooding mouth showing.... oooohhh!

Oh sorry this isn`t the 'Top 50 Men Who Make Women Salivate' list is it? Yikes!

Zorro was always a big hero in my little world

What - no William Wallace (Mel Gibson) from Braveheart?

- then again I guess "we don't need another hero . . . ."

Mmmm

Hi Michaelie

I know what you mean, one of the reasons I like looking at these lists is that they tell you something about the general thoughts of people. I just added mine up above, they’re quite different to the ones that made the Top 50.

Thanks for popping in,

Tracy

He he, I know what you mean, Ash. That’s what I thought in the beginning, then I realised that wasn’t what they meant (well, I think there’s an element of that in there)...

There’s a few films in there that I haven’t heard nor seen to...I guess that’s bound to happen.

Nice to hear your faves

Hello MNG

Are you singing Tina Turner on my post? Hmmmm, I'm not sure that is allowed....

No Mel Gibson, that's a point..what a pity...and yes, I am being sarky... Mel is like Posh Spice-everywhere...

It's a pretty good list, and I'm glad to see Donnie Darko on there. Spongebob Squarepants is a bit of an oddity, though.

Lassie! hahaha I love that Lassie is on that list. How funny.

I agree with Nina on the spongebob thing though. I can't stand him. How is he a hero?

Hi Tracy,

I just realised that I missed this one altogether?

What a great topic and not much unlike Ash, it's hard to get down the list without .... um...feeling.

Indiana was always amongst the greatest for me, because '...he made it up as he went along.'

Bond - well only because he was so unavailable - you know how it goes?

Han Solo - a wild boy, but good at heart, which girl could resist?

Elle Woods - Super Dooper Herion. I would add Josie (Drew Barrymore) in Never Been Kissed too.

My girls thought Marty MacFly (Micheal J) was pretty good as the architypical 'reluctant hero' in the Back to the Future Series.

Jack Sparrow - was pretty good at heart too, and brave when absolutely necessary, and quirky and eccentric...interesting in other words, albeit predictable?

By far though the bravest of them (but perhaps not the sexiest) of all, was Bailey in A Wonderful Life, what he did, took awesome faith, guts and fortitude, didn't it?

That's the stuff of saints.

Intersting post!

Hope you sirvived the 'killer storm' or is that just medie propoganda again?

Lilla ...

I like my anti-heroes

Costello from Le Samourai

HI Lilla

It’s good to see you, hope you’re well.

I like your description:

He he. I also had some ‘feelings’....

You chose some good ones, especially Jack Sparrow, I had forgotten about him. And yes, Bailey, I agree. And Bond and Indiana..

Thanks for popping in,

Tracy

PS Yes, the storm did happen. It was a bit of a corker, even our pooch was scared....
