What are your most memorable films of 2007?
December 21st 2007 07:19
Well, it’s nearly the end of another year. This means that I'm looking back at the films I’ve seen and re-evaluating them, trying to think about which ones stood out and why.
As an aside (I tend to have one don't I?), where has this year gone? I remember thinking the same thing last year at this time. Good job I didn’t bother taking down last year’s Christmas lights in our lounge as it wouldn’t have been worth it. Anyway, rather than lament about time whizzing past so quickly, I’d like to know which films have captured your attention this year and why?
I don’t think I can narrow my listing to just one main film, rather here are a few have affected me in various ways, generally encouraging me to look at life and all its different aspects and occurrences.
As you probably know from my posts, I am intrigued by the relationship between films and life. Films give me the opportunity to travel through a portal and into another world that I wouldn't normally have access to. If a film tells me something about life, I'm intrigued. The more a film makes me think, the better. The longer the character/s stay with me tends to mean how much of an impact the film has had on me. For example, when I saw the German film Head On in 2006, I was so affected by it that for the rest of the weekend, I felt as though I could have a conversation with the two main characters. That might sound extreme (and slightly insane) but to me, it meant that the film had been particularly effectual and when that happens, I relish the feeling.
Can you narrow down which films have been the most influential to you this year? Was it because of its theme, actors, style, and narration? Which films have helped you hop into a different world or expose you to a situation that was new to you? Or is it a film that made you laugh your socks off? Whatever the reason or film, I would love to hear more.
Here are some of mine with trailers, some of them I have previously reviewed, just click on the link if you fancy having a read, the remaining films are on my 'to do' list.
Enjoy....

Eastern Promises

Haven't had a chance to see many movies this year, haven't been to the cinema nearly as much despite starting a blog about films! Maybe blogging about films has taken up my film watching time? Anyway, Little Children was interesting but very very depressing I found. Strange things depress me sometimes, and the voiceover in that movie made me feel awful for some reason. I don't know if I am making sense... Probably not!
I know exactly what you mean, and feel the same way. Sometimes this happens with books and movies which, at first, I think I don't like, but I can't stop thinking about them, and I find that they have really affected me and I'm drawn back to them and I realise there is a reason for my reactions and end up feeling this great reverence for them...
Am I still not making sense? I think my brain is at the cake shop or something, I'm too hungry to think!
Anyway, great post!

Hi Mich
Good to see you as always.
Yes, Little Children was a dark and uncomfortable film, I can understand why you found it too depressing. I really liked it (hence, the mention) and the challenge of looking at people’s behaviour in a different way. I know what you mean about voiceovers, I was OK with this one, but usually I find it too off-putting in many films.
He he, that’s a thought that writing about films might’ve eaten into your actual viewing time!
I know what you mean about book characters being so vivid and involving that they stay with you for a while, I love that too. It sounds like it gets you thinking afterwards...
You are definitely making sense and I also have had the strongest cake cravings lately. My cousin brought over this divine chocolate cake last week and I can barely stop thinking about it and I’m not usually a cakey person. Hope you have satisfied yours.
Thanks for your thoughts, have a lovely weekend,
Tracy

Me too... I can see straight off that Clubland and Pan's Lab. are a must see.
Little children because I think Kate makes really interesting films... slightly off the beat and more to my own rythyms.
Eastern Promise intrigues me and I shall make a double effort to catch it, how bizarre?
Thanks for the heads up, no doubt I'll catch them all in due course now that I have them written down... I like your tastes in film.

Thanks for popping in and for your lovely compliments.
Yes, I also like Kate Winslett’s more off-beat, quirky films like Little Children and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (but not Titanic, what happened there!).
I’d love to hear what you think after you’ve seen any of them. They're not really light viewing, Hunting and Gathering is easier, but they're all definitely worth seeing for the glimpses into other different worlds.
You’re always welcome back if you feel like commenting later

Thanks for popping in, I didn't see Shrek 3 because I didn't think Shrek 2 was that great. I'm pleased that you enjoyed it though

Good to see you, thanks for sharing your choices. After I wrote the post, I realised I should’ve included a few others that I’ve forgotten like Lives of Others, so maybe I’ll do a part 2 later.
Ah Juno, I really want to see that. It’s coming out here soon, in about a week I think. I’m looking forward to that one. I wanted to see Once, but missed it at the cinema so I’m looking forward to it on DVD. I'm not There is another DVD one for me and Hot Fuzz was great for a laugh. I thought Waitress' quirkiness was entrancing at times.
Thanks for popping in,great choices!!

Glad you like these choices, yes, I thought Hunting and Gathering was very good. Tautou was enigmatic wasn’t she?
Your choices are definitely on my list to see: No Country For Old Men, Bizan, Who Loves The Sun and After The Wedding. Thanks for those suggestions.

Hmmmm, I did see many but every time this question is posed I forget.
I also loved the prestige, though I think that may be a film a la 2006. It surely was memorable.

Yes, Pan’s Labyrinth, what a haunting tale that is. I didn’t see Ratatouille, that’s one I might catch on DVD. I looked up The Prestige and it was 2006, but I don’t see anything wrong with including it, the list is always flexible! That was a film I wanted to see, but didn’t get around to it. It’s on my to-see DVD list... which is huge...
Thanks for popping in, hope you’re not too cold over there,
